Avallon is a charming old town on a granite spur. The original Celtic settlement became the Roman Aballo on the Via Agrippa. Fortified during the Middle Ages, Avallon still keeps large sections of its walls, which enclose a centre with period buildings and the Romanesque church of St-Lazarus.
