Founded in 1114, the abbey was the second of the four daughters of Citeaux. Three archbishops of Canterbury were among its friends. Thomas Becket began his exile at Pontigny in 1164.It is the largest Cistercian church ever built. Inside, the quadripartite vaulting of the nave mark a step in the development of the Cistercian style that Kenneth Conant has called ‘Burgundian half-gothic'.
