Avallon and surrounding area
The Morvan is a great plateau of granite and forest rising up in the centre of an area where rolling limestone hills and farmland are the norm.
- Montréal : two medieval gates and some period houses survive. The early Gothic church contains one of the best sets of choir stalls in Burgundy.
- Semur-en-Auxois : a stronghold of the duchy that realises to the full the picturesque possibilities of its site where the river Armançon loops round an outcrop of granite to create a naturally fortified position. Four big drum towers rise above the bridge among the tiled roofs of the medieval centre.
- Flavigny-sur-Ozerain : one of the loveliest medieval hill towns in Burgundy. The Renaissance houses lining the street on the way up to St-Geniès are typical of Flavigny's rich domestic architecture.
